Lloyd Bod, PhD

Principal Investigator at the MGH Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Associate Member at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard

I grew up in Martinique, a beautiful island in the French West Indies. After leaving this paradise at 18 years old, I received my BS and MS from the Pierre and Marie Curie University and the “Ecole Normale Superieure” of Paris in Immunology, which confirmed my passion for the immune system and its application in diseases, such as cancer. I then completed my PhD thesis at the Cochin Institute, where I had the chance to learn about Melanoma immunology or B-cell, γδ T-cells, and the physiology of Tregs, before my postdoctoral training at the Kuchroo and Regev Labs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Broad Institute in Boston.

Kassiana Mafra Bicalho, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

I was born and raised in Brazil, where I got my undergrad and grad degrees. After receiving my bachelor’s in biology, I continued my studies for Master and PhD in Cellular Biology and Immunology, focusing on B cells during the neonatal development of the liver. Part of this study was conducted at Brigham and Women`s Hospital (BWH)/Harvard Medical School (HMS) under the supervision of Dr. Rafael Rezende and Howard Weiner, where I had the opportunity to improve my work and be trained in new techniques. During my PhD studies I got fascinated by the field of immunology, especially the B cells. So, in June 2023 I joined Dr. Lloyd Bod lab at MGH as a postdoctoral fellow to proceed my studies in B cells, now focusing on cancer models.

As a postdoctoral fellow I`m interested in characterizing the B cells in the tumor environment, helping to find new targets for immunotherapy.

Chambit Paik, BS

Research Assistant II

I was born in South Korea and grew up in the Philippines. I studied Medical and Molecular Biology at MCPHS University, where I became really interested in Cancer Biology during my last year. My journey reflects my curiosity and dedication. I aim to uncover the mysteries of how our immune system interacts with cancer cells to make a difference in fighting this disease. Now, I focus on understanding how our immune cells affect cancer, especially B cells.
Besides my passion for science, I also love exploring the arts. I enjoy visiting museums, watching movies, and traveling to new places.

Alice Dejoux, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

I grew up in France where I studied as an Engineer specializing in Chemistry (Chimie Paris Tech). I did a master of Research at Imperial College of London, during which I became passionate about biology. I obtained a PhD in Immunology at Institut Pasteur - Sorbonne Université in June 2024, focalizing on anaphylaxis to neuromuscular blocking agents. As a postdoctoral fellow in Bod Lab I will continue working with B cells on cancer, by focusing on the role autoantibodies in patients treated with immunotherapy. Outside the lab I love to rock climb and to take drama class.

Vanessa Daniels, BS

Research Assistant II

I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and studied Biology at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Through my experiences, I found interest in a wide range of subjects including cancer biology, bioethics, and evolutionary biology. Joining the Bod Lab, I am interested in continuing to learn about the role of immune cells in the search for cancer treatments. Outside of the lab I enjoy spending time with friends, cooking and watching Jeopardy!

Fanny Amrein, MSc

MD-PhD student

Born from a Belgian mother and a Swiss father, I was raised next to lake Geneva in Switzerland, where I studied medicine at the University of Lausanne.
My master thesis confirmed my strong interest for oncology and immunology but most importantly my wish to associate clinical work and research. I graduated from med school in autumn 2024 and started in spring 2025 my MD-PhD thesis conjointly in the labs of Dr. Bod and Dr. Michielin (University of Geneva). My thesis focuses on B cell chromatine confirmation in solid tumors.
If you don’t see me in the lab, I’m either out for a run or cooking to host friends over.

Aditya Patil

PhD student (Harvard SEAS)

My origins can be traced back to Pune, India - often referred to as the Oxford of the East. As an undergrad, I was trained in Chemical Engineering at BITS, Pilani, India, until the "Physics of Life" caught my fancy at a summer school at NCBS, Bangalore, following which I double majored in Biology. I first arrived at Harvard (of the..west?) in 2021 for my Master's thesis in Don Ingber's group at the Wyss Institute, where I worked on developing various immunocompetent human microphysiological systems for disease modeling.
In fall 2023, I started my PhD in Bioengineering at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, looking to apply a quantitative, first principles approach to study mechanism and to engineer the immune system in cancer immunology - and joined the Bod and Mempel labs at MGH in June 2024.
In my free time, I can be spotted playing tennis, struggling at chess or losing money in poker.

Emily Ashkin, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

I grew up in North Carolina, and I studied Biochemistry and Archaeology at Rice University in Houston, TX. I obtained a PhD in Cancer Biology from Stanford University School of Medicine in May 2024, focusing on the cohesin complex and novel tumor suppressor genes in lung cancer. As a postdoctoral fellow in Bod and Ting Labs, I will study the role of repeat RNA elements in T and B cell function in various cancer contexts. Outside the lab, I love taking my dog to the park, eating good food, and watching my favorite fútbol teams (Tottenham Hotspurs and Argentina's La Albiceleste).

Ping Lu

Postdoctoral Fellow

I grew up in China and earned my PhD in Cell Biology from Peking University in 2022. I continued my postdoctoral training there from 2022 to 2025, where I developed and applied long-read single-cell and multi-omic approaches to study multimodal heterogeneity in cancer. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Bod and Gulhan Labs, I focus on B-cell immunity in cancer, including profiling B-cell repertoires and identifying tumor antigens that may serve as shared therapeutic targets across patients. Outside the lab, I enjoy spending time in nature, photography, and cooking.

Paola Mellia

Visiting Masters Student

I was born and raised in Italy, where I completed my undergraduate studies in Molecular Biology at the University of Padua. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna.
